Roy Christopher
Writer / University of Texas at Austin
Assistant Instructor, Communication Studies
I marshal the middle between Mathers and McLuhan. My main interests are
figurative language use and the evolution of technology. My main goal in
writing is entertainment and in science is novelty. I’m more of the former
than the latter and more of a fan than a critic. I’m an aging
BMX/skateboard zine kid. That’s where I learned to turn events and
interviews into pages with staples. The pages and staples have long since
given way to text-links and scrollbars, but the rest is basically the
same. I still ride bikes, and I still skateboard. I do still commit quite
a bit to actual pages, too.
My main project from 1997 to 2007 was
frontwheeldrive.com. With that site, I established myself as what
Disinformation called, “One of the Internet’s leading interviewers of
subculture and new-science icons.” I was most recently assistant editor of
Paul D. Miller a.k.a. DJ Spooky’s edited collection ‘Sound Unbound:
Sampling Digital Culture and Music’ (MIT Press, 2008). My first book is an
anthology interviews entitled ‘Follow for Now: Interviews with Friends and
Heroes’ (Well-Red Bear, 2007), which Disinformation named one of the most
important books published in 2007, and which Erik Davis called, “a crisp
and substantial remix of the major memes of the last decade or so.”
I hold a master’s degree in Communication Theory from San Diego State University
and am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Communication Studies at The
University of Texas at Austin. Prior to graduate work, I earned a
bachelor’s degree in Social Science, and spent over twenty years working
as a writer, editor, and designer both on- and off-line. I have written
about technology, science, music, and culture for everything from glossy
national magazines and regional weeklies to hometown newspapers and
homegrown ‘zines, and I have written, edited, designed, and consulted for
such diverse organizations as Microsoft, Nike, The MIT Press, MSN Music,
ESPN, the United States Army, Xbox, and Zero Skateboards. Though my work
has been featured on numerous websites, in many magazines, and in a few
books, http://roychristopher.com is now home to most of my writing. Follow on Twitter: @RoyChristopher
Bram Cohen
BitTorrent, Founder and Chief Scientist
Bram Cohen is Chief Scientist and co-founder of BitTorrent, Inc., and the inventor of the BitTorrent peer-to-peer (P2P) file distribution protocol.
Cohen is also the co-founder of CodeCon. Prior to the creation of BitTorrent, Bram worked at MojoNation. MojoNation allowed people to break up confidential files into encrypted chunks and distribute those pieces to other computers running MojoNations software. This concept served as the inspiration for Bram’s development of BitTorrent.
Before MojoNation, Cohen was a quintessential dot-commer, working for several
Internet companies through the mid-to-late 90s.
Cohen grew up in New York City, graduated from Stuyvesant High School and attended the University of Buffalo.
Ted Cohen
TAG Strategic, Managing Partner
Integrating his widespread digital authority in music, mobile, IPTV and product & service development, Ted Cohen is the Managing Partner of TAG Strategic.
In an industry that’s been slow to embrace change, Cohen is the exception to the stereotypical music-exec rule. Of course, when you start a career on the road with Alice Cooper and Van Halen, you’re more primed for the unexpected.
Known throughout the technology and music industries as being “part ambassador and part evangelist,” Cohen was instrumental in crafting the licensing agreements upon which the Rhapsody subscription service and the iTunes Music Store were built.
In his previous role as Senior Vice President of Digital Development & Distribution for EMI Music (home of artists including Coldplay and the Rolling Stones), Cohen led next-generation digital business development worldwide for this “big four” record company, which includes labels such as Capitol, Virgin, Angel/Blue Note, Parlophone and Chrysalis. During that time, EMI led the industry by embracing and exploiting new technologies and business models such as digital downloads and online music subscriptions, custom compilations, wireless services, high-definition audio and Internet radio.
In addition to seeking out, evaluating and executing business opportunities for the company on a global basis, Cohen served as both a strategist and key decision-maker for EMI’s global new media and anti-piracy efforts. He worked to establish company-wide digital policies, which have provided EMI’s artists and labels a substantial advantage in the digital music arena.
Prior to his role at EMI, Cohen served as Executive Vice President of Digital Music Network Inc., where he co-founded and served as Chairman of the groundbreaking Webnoize conferences.
Cohen also led two highly successful new media consulting operations, DMN Consulting and Consulting Adults, attracting clients such as Amazon.com, Microsoft, Universal Studios, DreamWorks Records, Liquid Audio, Wherehouse Records/Checkout.com and various other entertainment, technology and new media organizations. Cohen also held senior management positions at both Warner Bros. Records and Philips Media.
A 30-year industry veteran, Cohen currently chairs MidemNet, an international music/technology conference convened in Cannes each year. Cohen also serves on the NARAS (Grammy) Los Angeles chapter Board of Governors as well as the national Trustee Board, the Board of Directors for the Neil Bogart Memorial Fund, co-chairs the new media arm of the T.J. Martell Foundation, and lends his time and talents to music & technology education efforts such as the Grammy In The Schools Program. Cohen served two terms as the Chairman of the Mobile Entertainment Forum Americas.

Jack Conte
Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, filmaker
Jack Conte is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and filmmaker based in San Francisco. Conte first gained widespread attention when his video Yeah Yeah Yeah was featured on YouTube’s main page, garnering over 600,000 views. Conte formed the recording duo “Pomplamoose” with girlfriend Nataly Dawn, and the majority of their new music is released as singles posted to YouTube.
These mostly take the form of “VideoSongs”, a medium Conte defines with two rules:

Miles Doughty
Slightly Stoopid, Guitar, Bass, Vocals
With more than a decade of making music together, the members of Slightly
Stoopid have perfected one of the rarest and most valuable skills a band can develop:
the art of the stealth groove, that knack for quietly, almost innocently, sliding into a
composition, and utterly lassoing anyone within earshot by mid-song. That’s where the
band has come to reside, musically: deep in the pocket, that ever-elusive, funky trench
where a band can entrance an audience, hypnotize it and hold on to it until the set or CD
is finished. Built on a bedrock of nasty, oceanic slabs of dubby bass, meditative vocal
harmonies, rock-steady guitar licks and tightly syncopated percussive rhythms, Slightly
Stoopid illustrate a case study in underground success, steeped in years of hard touring,
an improvisational business model, and a creative process that continues to unwind and
push the envelope of a new jam-based genre the band helped to create.
Slightly Stoopid’s dual front-men Miles Doughty (Guitar, Bass, Vocals) and Kyle
McDonald (Guitar, Bass, Vocals), created their own label, Stoopid Records, in the
early 2000’s to avoid signing a record deal and keep their DIY work ethic and freedom
away from music industry politics. The west coast sound pioneers later added
musicians Ryan ‘RyMo’ Moran (Drums) and Oguer ‘OG’ Ocon (Congas,
Percussion, Harp, Vocals) from the B Side Players, as well as C-Money (Trumpet,
Keyboard) and Dela (Saxophone) from John Browns Body; solidifying their on stage
line up. Slightly Stoopid has built a large n’ loyal fan base, and has soared to one of the
most successful independent artists of this decade. The buzz surrounding the group
continues to increase with each successive release; their album catalog sales have topped
the 700,000 mark and the group continues to fill the most prestigious concert venues
around the world, and continues to create a legion of “Stoopidheads” in the process! Follow on Twitter: @slightlystoopid

Uncorked Studios
Though not in the music industry proper, David Ewald has built career in and around the intersection of music and design.
The purchase of Simple Machines Mechanic’s Guide to Putting Out Records changed his overall trajectory – turning a journalism student into pre-digital dorm room indie label owner. While his personal DIY story feels decidedly pedestrian (e.g. synthpop band tour in an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme), the years running Motorcoat brought a rich understanding of several aspects of creating, distributing and marketing music.
He has carried this understanding into his post-label professional life in visual and interaction design. He has been privileged to help Target, HP, Nike, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Beggars Group, Misra Records, Undertow and EA in various capacities along the way.

Kyle McDonald

Bob Weir
Tamalpais Research Institute, Founder
Grateful Dead, Founding Member
With a touring history that has made him one of the most traveled road musicians of all time and a restless music personality that has kept him occupied for over 50 years, Weir knows a thing or two about staying fresh and living in the moment. Although best known as one of the founding members of the Grateful Dead, adding Dead staples such as “Truckin’,” “Sugar Magnolia,” and “Cassidy” to the band’s catalog, Weir obtained a long and affluent music career that has allowed him to do what he loves and share it with others for nearly his entire life.
Born in 1947, Weir was adopted by a wealthy California engineer. As a teen, he secured his spot as one of the youngest members of the burgeoning folk scene that centered on a Palo Alto club called the Tangent – home to such future rock legends as Jerry Garcia, Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and Janis Joplin. In 1964, at the age of 17, Weir spent the majority of his time at a Palo Alto music store where Garcia taught guitar lessons. It wasn’t long before Weir and Garcia, along with Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, formed a blues and folk outfit. Originally called Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions, the band was later renamed The Warlocks -adding Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzman to the lineup – and eventually came to be known as the Grateful Dead.
Weir’s odd rhythm style developed as he played between the sweet articulated lead of Garcia and the avant-garde bass lines of Lesh. His songwriting developed as well, taking off particularly in the 1970s when he crossed paths with former pal John Perry Barlow. The two began producing songs in Weir’s own distinctstyle, spurring a songwriting partnership that would last for years to come.
Even with the Dead playing close to 100 shows a year, Weir needed other musical outlets. 1972 brought the release of his first solo album, Ace, on which the rest of the Dead backed him. Throughout the rest of the 1970s Weir toured and recorded with a number of different groups, the first of which was Kingfish. After releasing an album with the band in 1976, Weir began a solo project with producer Keith Olsen called Heaven Help the Fool. A brief tour to support the album resulted in collaborations with various session players, including Brent Mydland (who would join the Dead in 1979), Bobby Cochran, Alphonso Johnson and Billy Cobham. Weir also briefly toured with a group as Bobby and the Midnites, producing two albums.
Throughout the late 1980s and during the first half of the 1990s, the Dead remained Weir’s primary gig. Touring incessantly while all the while building up a community of “Deadheads,” the band finally found commercial success with their 1987 album, In the Dark. When Garcia died in 1995, Weir had just recently formed RatDog with Rob Wasserman, a bassist he had been playing duo shows with since the late 1980s. After Garcia’s death, former Primus drummer Jay Lane and ex-Kingfish harmonica/guitar player Matthew Kelly were added into the mix. With a revolving lineup, the group toured relentlessly, building a name for themselves while performing a mix of new Weir compositions and older, reworked Dead songs.
In 1998, Weir reunited with several former Dead bandmates to tour as The Other Ones, releasing a live album in 1999 and hitting the road again in 2000. The same year, RatDog released their first album, Evening Moods. In 2009, original Grateful Dead members Weir, Lesh, Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart teamed up with guitarist Warren Haynes and RatDog keyboardist Chimenti to tour as the Dead. The results, however, were erratic, leaving Weir feeling like the road trip was more work than fun and Lesh saying the music didn’t seem to be moving forward. Besides stirring up some commotion, the ’09 Dead tour reminded Weir and Lesh of the chemistry the two had as bandmates. This led to the creation of Furthur – arguably one of the most successful Dead projects Weir has participated in to date.
Currently, Weir is married to the former Natascha Muenter, with whom he has two young daughters, Monet and Chloe. While not consumed by music, Weir spends a great deal of time as a social activist. He has done work as an environmental activist with several organizations, such as Greenpeace, and currently serves on the Board of Advisors for the Rainforest Action Network and for Seva Foundation. He works with both the Rex Foundation, an organization started by the Dead in 1984, and the Furthur Foundation. Most recently, Weir is on the Board of Directors for Headcount, a nonprofit that registers voters and inspires participation in democracy through the power of music.
Besides Further, Bob has been realizing his dream of building a state of art webcasting and recording facility using the Meyer Sound Labs Constellation System by founding the Tamalpais Research Institute (www.tristudios.com).
A long, strange, very creative trip – and not remotely over. Keep up with Bob on Facebook or follow him on Twitter: @BobWeirRatDog.

In 1979 he was made head of IRCAM’s Pedagogy Unit and linked the science and technology side of the institute and the artistic side. In the mid-eightes he started a new unit in IRCAM dedicated to developing real-time music software for personal computers. At the time Wessel taught the first computer music class at the Paris Conservatory. For his work at IRCAM he was recognized as Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture.
In 1988, he arrived at UC Berkeley as Professor of Music with the charge of building the interdisciplinary Center for New Music and Audio Technologies (CNMAT). He organized CNMAT as a laboratory wherein both science and technology people interact on daily basis with musicians. Wessel insists on an instrumental conception – the computer as musical instrument equipped with gesture sensing devices and sound diffusion systems.
In addition to directing the music science and technology research at the CNMAT, Wessel is an affiliate Professor of Psychology, and member of the Parallel Computing Laboratory in the Department of Computer Science. Follow Wessel on Twitter: @DavidLWessel
