Manufactured by his company Linn Electronics, the LM-1 and its successors the LinnDrum and Linn9000 provided the drums for countless hit records during the 1980s by artists including Prince, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Peter Gabriel, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Devo and Bruce Hornsby, and are considered a major influence on the music of the era.
In 1988, he designed the innovative MPC60 MIDI Production Center for the Japanese Akai Company, with his signature appearing on the product’s front panel. Combining a sampling drum machine with a real-time MIDI sequencer, this product gradually became the industry standard in the production of hip-hop, rap, dance and related music styles throughout the 1990s, and has been credited as a significant influence in the evoluation of hip hop music. This was followed in 1994 with the enhanced MPC3000 and others, and the MPC product line is still successful 20 years later. In addition to these designs for Akai, he also helped designed products for a variety of companies during the 1990s, including the Japanese Roland company.
In 2002, he returned to manufacturing his own products—as well as his love of the guitar—with the release of a groundbreaking guitar effects product called AdrenaLinn. Used on hit recordings by artiss such as John Mayer, Green Day and Red Hot Chili Peppers, and winning numerous international music product awards, AdrenaLinn transforms a guitarist’s tone by using variety of innovative rhythmic filtering methods, all in sync to an internal drumbeat. This was followed in 2003 by the enhanced AdrenaLinn II, the M-Audio Black Box (containing many AdrenaLinn features) in 2005, and the AdrenaLinn III in 2007.
Apart from his music product career, Roger is a guitarist and songwriter, having co-written hits for Eric Clapton (“Promises”, 1979) and Mary Chapin Carpenter (“Quittin’ Time”, 1991), and having toured as a guitarist with the pianist and songwriter Leon Russell in 1976 at age 21. He and his wife Ingrid currently reside in the hills of Berkeley, California and he occasionally performs around the San Francisco bay area on guitar and mandolin. You can see him playing traditional Italian songs on mandolin at Berkeley’s Caffe Trieste on the 1st Monday evening of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. He also hosts the Rog Mahal Concert Series at his home, providing an intimate venue for creative musicians of various styles of music. And here’s an interview he did for BBC Radio 4 in 2007

Max Mathews
Professor of Music, Emeritus; Stanford University
I was born in Nebraska in 1926. After serving in World War II as a radar technician in the navy, I studied electrical engineering at Cal Tech and MIT where I received a Sc.D degree in 1954. I worked in the Bell Telephone Laboratories from 1955 to 1987 and at Stanford University music department (CCRMA) from 1987 to 2005. I currently live in San Francisco and continue to do research at CCRMA. I studied violin performance until I finished high school and continue to enjoy playing as an amateur.
My job interests focused on applications of computers, at MIT analogue computers to intercept and destroy attacking missiles, and at Bell Labs digital computers to design speech coders.
In 1957, with the encouragement of my boss, John R Pierce, I started writing the programs Music 1 through Music 5 to synthesize music on a digital computer. These are open source programs. Music 5 (1967) was written in the compiler Fortran. Music 5 together with my book, The Technology of Computer Music, the MIT press 1969made computer music synthesis widely accessible.
In 1968, F.R. Moore and I built “Groove” one of the first real-time performance synthesizers which involved a digital computer.
From 1987 to much of my time was spent making new controllers for real-time synthesis. My efforts together with Tom Oberheim and Bob Boie culminated in the Radio-Baton which tracks two batons in as they move in three dimensional space thus allowing one performer to control a music performance with six independent variables.
In the last years I have been experimenting with “phaser filters” to synthesize more beautiful timbers. These filters add high Q resonances to music. The frequencies and Q’s of these resonances can be dynamically changed during a performance.

Tom Oberheim
Maker of Marion & Oberheim synthesizers / Inventor of the first polypohonic music synthesizer
Starting out in the music electronics business in the late 60s, early 70s by building legendary devices for Maestro and using his storefront to sell ARP synthesizer everyone from Leon Russell to Frank Zappa, Tom Oberheim went on to shape the development of music equipment – and the sound of popular music – like very few other people. Actually, for a time in the 80s it seemed like it was just about impossible to have a hit without an Oberheim DMX or OB–Xa, as anyone from Run DMC to Van Halen relied heavily on those machines. Sometime later the Oberheim company was sold, but Tom Oberheim went on to develop more groundbreaking products, like the Marion Rack Synthesizers and some groundbreaking soundcard systems with SeaSound. It seems like he never lost the enthusiasm he felt when he first started working with computers in the 50s, all while keeping a decidedly consumer friendly outlook: “My philosophy in building music equipment has always been not to try to second-guess the musician.”

Dave Smith
Dave Smith Instruments, Founder
Dave Smith founded Sequential Circuits, the premier manufacturer of professional music synthesizers, in the mid-70s. In 1977, he designed the Prophet-5, the world’s first microprocessor-based musical instrument. This revolutionary product was the world’s first polyphonic and programmable synth, and set the standard for all synth designs that have followed. The Prophet instruments played a major part in the recordings of all musical styles, and are still prized by musicians today.
Dave is also generally known as the driving force behind the generation of the MIDI specification in 1981-in fact, he coined the acronym. In 1987 he was named a Fellow of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) for his continuing work in the area of music synthesis. After Sequential, Dave was President of DSD, Inc, an R&D division of Yamaha, where he worked on physical modeling synthesis and software synthesizer concepts. He then started the Korg R&D group in California, which went on to produce the professional musician favorite Wavestation products and other technology. He then took over as President at Seer Systems and developed the world’s first software based synthesizer running on a PC. This led to the development of the world’s first fully professional software synthesizer, Reality, released in 1997.
After quickly tiring of softsynths, he began designing hardware instruments again, starting with the Evolver in 2002. Dave Smith Instruments now has a full line of analog and analog/digital hybrid synthesizers including the Prophet ’08, Mopho, Tetra, and Evolver/Poly Evolvers.
