Marc Canter
Broadband Mechanics, Founder / Pioneer of Computer Based MultiMedia
Marc Canter started a company named MacroMind, which became Macromedia. MusicWorks - MarcoMind's first product - was the first music product for the Macintosh - released Octpber 1984. It was the first product to have a music grid notational system, based upon a music keyboard, tilted on it's side.
MacroMind then did VideoWorks (which evolved into Director) and Maze Wars+ (the first networked based LAN game.) Along the way Marc helped build what was known as the 'multimedia industry'.
Then Marc started an interactive music video band - called the MediaBand - in 1992. Todd Rungren produced it. Marc then produced an Interactive TV talk show called the 'Marc Canter show'. Brian Zisk took both of these types of scalable content, and put them on the internet for Marc.
A location based entertainment operating system then followed - with the prototype based in Marc's house in Potrero. Marc then helped build the ChoiceSeat flat panel system for SuperBowl XXXIII and a digital city in Trieste, Italy was then designed and almost built. NOW.com (the world's largest IPTV system) was the next project - which completed the 1990's (Marc having successfully avodied the entire Web 1.0 pump up and deflation phenomena.)
Along the way Marc watched Dave Winer invent XML-RPC, RSS and popularize client based servers and CMSs.
Blogging, social networking, open source, open standards, ourmedia.org, structuredblogging, org, FOAF, OpenID, Data Sharing Summits and the Bill of Rights for users of Social Media - followed.
Digital lifestyle aggregation, "bringing social to software", 'Open is the new Black' and the recent book "How to build the Open Mesh" and the memes closely associated with Marc.
Marc's company Broadband Mechanics has a white label platform - which includes social networking, aggregation engine, publishing system and CMS - PeopleAggregator. Systems for Bell Canada, Mondadori, theTimesofIndia, GTChannel, and RadioOne have been built with PeopleAggregator.
